About Clearhavn
I'm Ryan Marshall. I built Clearhavn during my own family-law case, for parents who walk into court without a lawyer and have to prove what's been happening on their own.
Why I built it
A few years ago I was preparing for a hearing in my own custody case. The pattern I needed to show the court had been unfolding for months, but the evidence was scattered: text screenshots buried in my camera roll, calendar holds in three different apps, audio recordings I'd forgotten the date of, copies of orders printed and re-printed every time something changed.
I went looking for a tool. What I found fell into three buckets. Spreadsheets, which work for the first 50 events and then fall apart. iPhone-only apps from a decade ago, which lock everyone on an Android or a work-issued laptop out of half the household. And law-firm case software priced for firms — hundreds of dollars per seat per month, with a workflow designed for paralegals, not parents.
None of them fit. What I needed was something quieter: a calm, private workspace where I could log events as they happened, attach the evidence that proved them, track deadlines and court orders, and produce a court-ready chronology when the hearing came. Something that worked on whatever device I had on me at 11pm the night before a filing.
So I built it. First for me. Then, when other self-represented parents started asking how I'd organized my case, for them. That's Clearhavn.
What Clearhavn is, and what it isn't
Clearhavn is a private workspace where you document the events, evidence, deadlines, witnesses, and court orders that make up your case, and turn that record into a court-ready chronology PDF or evidence packet at hearing time. It works on the web, on iPhone, and on Android. The free plan is real: one case, free forever. Pro is $12 a month.
Clearhavn is not legal advice. It doesn't tell you what to argue or what the law says in your jurisdiction. If you can afford an attorney, hire one. If you can't, Clearhavn is the workspace that helps you bring the strongest record you can to whoever ends up reading it: a judge, a mediator, a guardian ad litem, an attorney you finally retain a week before the hearing.
It's also not a co-parent communication platform. Clearhavn is private to you — the other parent doesn't have an account, can't see what you log, and isn't notified that you're using it. If your court has ordered you to communicate through OurFamilyWizard or TalkingParents, you still need those for the messaging. Clearhavn organizes everything else.
What I won't do with your data
The data you put into Clearhavn is the most sensitive material in your life. I treat it that way. Some of the commitments below are technical defaults; some are decisions I made deliberately because they were the right ones for this audience, even when easier choices existed.
- No PII in error monitoring. When something breaks, the error report is the bug, not your case. Sentry receives no names, no message contents, no attachment titles.
- Cookieless analytics. Plausible, no third-party trackers, no Google Analytics, no Facebook pixel, no advertising cookies. I don't need to know who you are individually to run this company.
- Download everything. You can export your full case as JSON at any time. If Clearhavn ever disappears, your record doesn't.
- One-click account deletion. Real delete, not soft archive. Owned cases and all their attachments are removed; your row is gone.
- Panic exit and PIN lock. For situations where a device is shared, can be taken, or can be seen by the wrong person.
- No selling, no sharing, no training. Your case data is never sold, never shared with advertisers, and never used to train any model.
